What type of Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your house is your castle, and if you’re like the majority of homeowners, finding window treatments in Dover that give you privacy and sound control to maintain your castle is a top consideration. Any window treatment is better than a naked window. However there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, particularly on specialty windows.

Providing Privacy on Non-Square Windows

Most large, rectangular windows you have are easy to cover with almost any window treatment including Dover shutters, shades, or blinds.

But there might be some situations when you need a specific type of window treatment to provide adequate privacy and light control. These could be:

  • Windows in the bathroom where excess moisture might cause problems for fabric window treatments.

  • Sidelight windows that are tall and skinny where window treatments can be pushed around by the door’s movement.

  • Non-square windows such as arches, circular windows, bow windows, etc., where conventional store-bought blinds and shades can’t cover your window without covering up the window’s unique shape.

  • Big windows that can be difficult to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll need window treatments that go the extra mile to provide privacy to your house.

As a plus, find window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The best window treatments for privacy that we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is what you need. To let light in and see outside, just tilt the louvers. For tall or high windows, you should keep the louvers tilted at an angle so light can come in but passersby can’t see in.

Plantation shutters are also great for specialty-shaped windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are water resistant, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Another great window treatment for privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. Though they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from water resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window covering gives you at least some privacy, there are a few that perform poorer than others. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add a breezy feeling to a room. But they’re easy to see through, particularly when it’s dark out.

Another window covering we don’t recommend for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can break and/or get stuck at an angle. If you can’t completely close the blinds due to breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
