Measuring Your Windows For Shutters in Dover
Plantation shutters in Dover are typically priced on a square foot basis, so to get an approximate measurement for a price quote, simply measure your window height and width, to the nearest ⅛ of an inch.
For Dover homeowners who are DIYers, Sunburst will show you the simplest way to measure your windows to be fitted for indoor shutters.
Measuring Square & Rectangular Windows for Shutters
Common square windows seem like the easiest type of window to measure – and they are, at least compared to other window shapes. But there’s still an entire process that goes into getting accurate measurements. Here’s what to do.
The Tools That You Need:
-
Tape measure
-
Pencil and paper
Starting off, measure the width (the horizontal distance). Take a measurement across in three different spots: as close as you can to the center, close to the top, and close to the bottom of the pane. Write down all of them, to the closest ⅛ of an inch. After that, do the same for the length (vertical) – get three measurements, one in the middle, and one near either edge of the window like shown below.
Measuring in three spots for each dimensions is important because no window is a truly perfect square. And because of the different types of shutter mounts different windows need, you might either need to record the absolute smallest measurement (inside mount), or the longest measurement (for an outside mount). Taking measurements in three places makes sure your bases are covered.
Measuring Non-rectangular Windows for Shutters
Windows that aren’t rectangular are where measuring can become extremely tricky. Just like there’s no such thing as a perfectly square window, there’s no perfect octagon, circle, or arched window – and that means that even if you get perfect measurements, you could still have issues. For the best results, get a professional measurement (which Sunburst Shutters Delaware can do for no cost). If you’d still like to do so yourself, here’s how to measure most types of unique-shaped windows for shutters.
How to Measure Rounded and Arched Windows
Measure the width on the window’s flat bottom. Measuring only the window opening, record to the closest ⅛ of an inch the width of the arch. For the height, find the halfway point of the window by dividing the width distance in two, then measure to the top of the window from that point. Again, record to the closest ⅛ of an inch.
How to Measure Elongated Arch Windows for Shutters
Elongated arch windows look like a combination of a rectangular window and a circular window, with a flat, wide bottom and vertical “legs,” but with rounded top edges and a higher arch. So think of it exactly as that: a rectangle and an arch combined. Get the width measurement like you would any other arched window, then take a measurement of the height of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves into an arch). Next, find the window’s maximum length from the middle of the width, minus the leg height. Again, record all of these to the closest ⅛ of an inch.
How to Measure Octagon and Circular Windows
Full circle and octagon windows are some of the trickiest to find measurements, as there are a ton of small details that can alter the shutter dimensions you might need. We strongly recommend leaving these types of windows to a professional.
