How To Help Black Out your Dover Windows

April 02, 2018

There are many reasons you may want to block light from coming through windows in Dover. Say you want to dampen ambient street light, constant traffic going by, or regular sunlight, blocking the light coming from your windows is necessary for relaxing and getting quality sleep.

For those looking to get better sleep, Sunburst is here to help Dover homeowners control the light.

Which Window Coverings Black Out The Best?

Lots of Dover window treatments claim to block light, and you can pretty easily divide them into three categories: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Here’s what you need to know.

Blackout Window Treatments – The Good

The best window treatments to block light from your windows should do a few things:

  • Effectively prevent light from pouring in.

  • Operate easily depending on your preferences.

  • Look stylish.

The window covering that hits all these marks is Dover plantation shutters. When you shut the slats, shutters create a kind of seal on your windows, blocking nearly all the light. Our patented Polywood shutters even have built-in weatherstripping that fills in the gaps around the frame, blocking even more light. And unlike hardware store shutters, Polywood is guaranteed to split or crack, which can result in gaps in between the louvers and frame.

And unlike some gaudy DIY blackout products, shutters look amazing in your home. Instead of looking like a piece of hardware, they’re as pretty as they are effective.

A second option in the “good” category is room-darkening cellular shades. These are made with thick and layered material to block a good amount of light, and extend past your window opening. There can be some slight spaces around the edges of the window where light might peak into the room. But for a non-shutter product, light-blocking shades make for a good secondary choice.

Blackout Window Treatments – The Bad

In the “bad” category are window treatments that don’t quite go the distance when it comes to blacking out a window. Any kind of fabric window treatment, from drapes to curtains, can let some light in if they aren’t both incredibly thick and go past the frame of your window.

Even heavy-duty blinds don’t do quite so well, since the slats on blinds are always going to let slivers of light in. That means light is going to come in, even if it’s at a very slight angle.

Blackout Window Treatments – The Ugly

Search for “Dover window blackouts” on the internet and you might find some DIY sheets that you can hang up in your window frame to completely black it out. Most of them are customizable to your window’s dimensions, and stick to your frame with velcro or something similar. And for the most part, they work fairly well.

But the real problems with those products are twofold. First off, they don’t look great. Many of these products sacrifice style for function. So if you choose to install some of these blackout sheets, be sure to do it in an area that you don’t mind looking dull.

Second, for being easy to install, you’d better hope that you won’t have to take them up and down often. The adhesive or velcro that attach them to the wall can wear off fairly quickly, which puts you right where you started: needing to block light.
