The Right Way To Clean Your Interior Shutters
If you’re doing a deep clean or prepping your house for a gathering, cleaning your Dover shutters is a job that you need to do, and do right. But if it’s not, you might be looking at permanent stains, discoloring, or damage to the shutter.
What’s the best way to clean shutters? It depends on what kind of shutters you have in your home.
How To Clean Faux Wood Shutters
Here’s what you’ll need to clean faux wood shutters:
-
A dusting cloth (microfiber works best)
-
A slightly wet cloth
Using a dusting cloth, go over each part of your shutters to get rid of any dust or dirt. For larger stains or messes, wipe them down with a slightly damp cloth. As with wood shutters, don’t use any chemical agents or any abrasive cleaners.
A slightly wet cloth is ok to use to clean the entire shutter, but it’s usually a good idea to dry the shutter after removing the mess.
When cleaning real wood shutters, be sure to take special care not to do anything that could damage the finish or expose the wood to moisture.
You’ll want these supplies to clean your shutters:
-
A dust cloth (microfiber works best)
-
A soft, dry cloth
For ridding your wood shutters of dust, all that’s needed is to give the frame and louvers a quick once-over with a microfiber cloth.
For deeper cleaning, first wipe down with a dry cloth. You usually shouldn’t use a damp cloth unless absolutely necessary, and even then, the less damp the cloth, the better. Only do this for the affected area – don’t wipe down the entire shutter with it. If you’re using a wet cloth, be sure to follow it with a dry cloth. Also, don’t ever use a caustic chemical agent, or you could cause damage to the finish of your shutters.
