Exposing 4 Shutter Myths
We spend a lot of time speaking with homeowners about shutters in Dover.
And though it may come as a surprise, when we speak with people around Nation's Summer Capital, we hear a few shutter myths floating around. We want to take a few minutes to dispel some common myths surrounding shutters so you can make the right choice for your house when looking into new window treatments.
Myth: Shutters Are Easy to Install Yourself
Lots of home projects can easily be done on your own in a single afternoon. Installing shutters may not be one of them, however.
Putting in new shutters can be difficult from the get-go, as the measurements of the window dimensions must be incredibly precise to ensure an easy and snug fit, as well as to enable proper operation of your windows. Depending on the shutter material, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, hoisting large shutters and installing them straight may present a rough job. Unless each part of the process is done exactly right, you could end up with misshapen shutters or frequent drafts from ill-fitting weather-stripping.
Myth: Shutters Will Make Homes Look Dim
A few home designers might shy away from shutters, claiming they’ll make a space look dark or dimly lit. This myth probably results from unfamiliarity with plantation shutters.
Think of it this way: light from the sun always comes through your windows from an angle. Shutters give you the ability to change that angle by adjusting their louvers, offering you more control over amount of light that comes in. And bear in mind, shutters are able to swing completely open to let in all the light you could need.
Myth: Shutters Cost a Lot
It’s a fact that shutters won’t be as cheap as your run of the mill blinds from a home improvement store. But this myth is all about how you think about shutters. If you’re thinking them just as a simple decoration that isn’t expected to last more than a few years, then yes, shutters can be a little expensive. But shutters are a permanent addition to your home, and offer several benefits: shutters are energy efficient and are shown to lower your monthly HVAC bills, they can increase your home value, and shutters can last generations, unlike blinds–which will have to be replaced over and over again.
Myth: Shutters Only Work In Old Homes
Perhaps the name “plantation shutters” has caused the myth that shutters are only good for old houses, but it certainly isn’t accurate. While shutters were seen often in older home styles stretching back decades, their straight, clean geometry and neutral colors makes it so they fit in just as well with more fashionable, modern designs. Interior shutters are the definition of versatile window treatments.
